Itinerary

BLUE LAGOON

The Blue Lagoon is considered one of the New Wonders of the World. Enjoy a relaxation in the geothermal waters. The geothermal water originates 2,000 metres below the surface, where freshwater and seawater combine at extreme temperatures. It is then harnessed via drilling holes at a nearby geothermal power plant, Svartsengi, to create electricity and hot water for nearby communities. On its way to the surface, the water picks up silica and minerals. When the water emerges, its temperature is generally between 37°C and 40°C (98- 104°F). But owing to variables outside of our control – including weather and time of year – the water temperature sometimes fluctuates beyond this range.

WHY IS IT BLUE?

The geothermal water has a unique composition, featuring three active ingredients – Silica, Algae & Minerals. The blue colour comes from the silica and the way it reflects sunlight. During summer there can also be a hint of green in the water. This is the result of the algae, which multiplies quickly when exposed to direct sunlight. However, and this might come as a surprise to you, the water is actually white. If you pour it into a transparent cup, it will always have a milky white colour. The sun simply makes it look blue!

NORTHERN LIGHTS

You are about to embark on a mission to see the Northern Lights, which are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful celestial displays found in nature. But up there, there are many other cosmic wonders waiting to be discovered. All you need to do is gaze skywards into the Arctic night canopy to explore the magic of countless stars and the moon itself.

The tour not only sets out to find the legendary Northern Lights, we also use the opportunity to pinpoint some of the stars & constellations in the sky.

There are a few factors that determine whether or not seeing the Aurora Borelis is possible, and we´re experts in reckoning our chances of seeing them. This means we have a high success rate, and we do not go out unless we feel the odds are in our favour. To search for the Auroras you need to stand outside in the Icelandic winter and you need to dress very warmly.

GOLDEN CIRCLE

The tour starts with a stop in Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing and the birthplace of the oldest existing parliament in the world. This is also where the gigantic tectonic plates of America and Eurasia have pulled apart and the resulting rift valley is right there before your eyes on the shores of Iceland’s biggest lake.

The next stop is at Geysir Hot Springs, the home of the one-and-only original geyser and Iceland’s most iconic natural attraction. Here the ground trembles and steaming hot water spouts spectacularly skywards from the famous Strokkur Geyser every few minutes.

Now for a leisurely walk down to Gullfoss Waterfall, which is an awesome sight to behold. Here a powerful glacial river cascades down 32 meters on two levels and into a narrow canyon with a thunderous roar. The last stop on our Golden Circle tour is the volcanic crater Kerið, formed when a large magma chamber collapsed. The piercing blue colour of the water surrounded by the red lava rocks is a breathtaking contrast of nature.

See the erupting geyser & hot springs, experience the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall and follow in the footsteps of Vikings when walking down the lava canyon where the American and Eurasian continents have dramatically pulled apart in Þingvellir National Park.
